After Jenny George
All the worms are dying.
The sidewalk is littered with them
squirming their last breaths away.
Birds wait in the branches above, sick
with their anticipation.
A waiting bird isn’t always a vulture,
but it is always hungry.
A dying worm doesn’t care
about the difference;
it gets eaten all the same.
